I really think Fukuchi does a decent job of keeping him from becoming a static character even as the series becomes closer to his mainstay --battle manga. Mainly because of how Saike thinks that the only value there is in his life is if he sacrifices himself and lives as if today was his last day. His character growth is definitely going to come in recognizing that he has a lot to live for and live everyday trying to be a better person not because each day might be his last but because that's the kind of person he should and wants to be.
