Weekly Shounen Sunday #18 (Preview)

Fresh off livetweeting a RYOKO translation is your buddy Sakaki. No one had ever say I don't do anything for the clearly-there-but-hiding-out-of-shyness-right? Weekly Shounen Sunday community. Since the previews are easy to do and proving popular, I figure I'd slam down another one before going back in the trenches to translate Gintama. Let's go, go, go.

On the cover is Yui Okada who is a young movie star doing a pinup thing in the magazine this week. I don't know much else about her (Aside that she shares a name with a retired model which made googling her somewhat difficult.)

Next up is the TOC. A fan of the blog asked me to translate the names of the series in English, and I being the benevolent blogger I am will oblige. Here we go!

Mushin of a Thousand years Part 2 by Rumiko Takahashi.
Detective Conan by Gosho Aoyama
Komi-san has a Communication sickness by Tomohito Oda
Magi by Shinobu Ohtaka
Amano Megumi is full of openings! by Nekoguchi
RYOKO by Kaito Mitsuhashi
Tenshi and Akuto!! by Aya Hirakawa
Soubotei must be destroyed. by Kazuhiro Fujita
The Maiko house's Cook by Aiko Koyama
Permanent Battlefield!! Bug magistrate office by Hiroshi Fukuda
First love Zombie by Ryou Minenami
Be Blues by Motoyuki Tanaka
Hiiragi Sama is looking for herself by Hiroyuki Nishimori
Tokiwa has come! by Shun Matsuena
Birdmen by Yellow Tanabe
Saike Once Again by Tsubasa Fukuchi
Hayate the Combat Butler by Kenjiro Hata
Lady DameTerasu by Shun Fujiki
Absolutely Lovely Children by Takashi Shiina
Electric Wave Teacher by Takeshi Azuma
Sunday Unscientific Laboratory by Yuuji Yokoyama

It's sort of weird to me, some of the titles feel like they lose some flair in English, such as Komi-san and Denpa kyoushi, but others seem to be improved, like Souboutei and Mushibugyo. Anyway, the TOC is pretty normal stuff aside from Denpa's last chapter being pretty low (a shame, even if I didn't really read the series) and Mushibugyo being comfortably in the middle. Like I said last week, I feel like Saike's position isn't indicative of it's actual success as it sells pretty decently but is consistently on the bottom. I think that's just how it goes with it's weird serialization schedule. Also quite a few things are absent this week --Aozakura, Keijo, Dagashi, Keijo, Major 2nd and Rinne, but other than part two of Mushin, there's not much replacing them. I guess it means I have less work to do on Tuesday?

Next up is more info on the new series starting with issue 19 (the next one!) The first is called Tenshou no Quadrable (The soaring Quadrable) by Takahiro Arai who brought us Daren Shan and Arago, which takes place during the Sengoku jidai and features four boys coming from Japan to save Europe from demons it appears.

After that in issue #20 is Hoankan Evans' Lie ~Dead or Love~ (Peace Officer Evans ~Dead or Love~) by Mizuki Kuriyama. Which is about a sheriff who's on his guard at all times but can't seem to hit it off with the ladies --despite all that he still thinks he's hot stuff. The magazine says it's a "Gunman western comedy".

In issue 21 is Daiku No Hatou (The ninth surging sea) Michiteru Kusaba which is about a guy who pursues a girl who he falls for at first sight to a fishing/aquatics college club in Nagasaki. In short it's like Silver Spoon but with Sea creatures instead of land ones. I guess they're priming the magazine for when SS finally ends...soon?

In combined issues 22/23 is Youkai Giga (Temporary name) by Satsuki Satou...which I can't tell if the description is about the artist of the series or an artist in the series. But it seems be about someone making a new story about old yokai. I guess we'll find out more when it starts, cause I'll cover it for sure, as this is the series I'm most looking forward to out of this batch.

In issue 24 is K.O.I (Temporary title) by Tamiki Wakaki who's probably the most popular out of the returning artists, as he brought us The World Only God Knows which got two (three?) anime. There isn't a decription for this at all, rather all it says is that the protagonist is the pink haired girl pictured on top, and that more info is forthcoming. I'm hoping it isn't a romance series, but considering Wakaki's track record, I feel like that's a hope falling on deaf ears.

Last in issue 25 is Iseki Shoujo (Meteor girl) by Riichi Ishiyama which calls itself a "New age girl meets girl story". A girl falls out of the sky...or well, it seems that rather than that cliched set up it's several thousand that fall...and a guy who...isn't really popular heads to a castle in the sky....? Yeah, it's pretty confusing sounding, but the author of this did a one shot where a boy meets a girl and is eaten by her in the end so...that's a thing.

And the next issue preview! On the cover is Rikako Yagi as the week's pin-up, and the start of Tenshou no Quadrable. Maou and Yuugami will have color pages, And Conan is on break....ah. Guess it's not gonna be three weeks this time around. The mini blurbs on the bottom say that Hayate's got two chapters left, Dagashikashi will be taking place in Hotaru's house, and Saike has a face off with the new student in his school. Sounds pretty exciting to me, but that's still another week out. Be back with me Tuesday with issue #18! Until then!

  1. Sounds fun! I kinda have the feeling that Wakaki new manga could be a surprise in the sense that it looks like typical romcom but it'll actually be something else or a twisted take on the romcoms we usually have. Arai new series should be fun, will it be more typical shounen action series? I love his art, hope it's a nice read. It's good to see that Kusaba tries something else than a sports manga which is actually really cool. Evans life could be fun too and setting is pretty rare for today's manga. Youkai Giga looks fabulous, probably my most anticipated series, I kinda feel like it's a good thing that next horror story (looks like it for me) will be serialized in a mag with Fujita's Souboutei. Iseki shoujo sounds at least original enough for me too try looking for it.

Looks like a really nice bunch of series! Hope that we'll see them for a longer time.

    1. Oh man! I'm sorry it took me so long to reply. I have issues with comments on the blog at work and then I just forgot to when I'm at home. I'm so glad you came!

Yeah, I'm most looking forward to Yokai Giga, though Quadrable looks like it could be interesting. Same for Meteorite girl, but to be honest I have no idea what it's really about, lol. I'm looking forward to finding out though.

Two youkai series in the same mag does sound fun doesn't it? I hope it'll stick around, and I hope you will too! Welcome to the blog!

  2. Thank you for this preview. Just like many other I'm really looking forward to Youkai Giga. I hope it will be similar to "The Last Youkai".
The pink haired girl reminds me a lot of the main character from Wedding Peach. My bet is that her name will be either Momoko or Sakura.

    1. Thanks for commenting! I actually didn't know what you were talking about at first, but I re-read "The last yokai" and it was pretty decent. I wouldn't mind if this was similar to it at all.

I want to think that K.O.I won't be a romantic comedy, but the name alone suggests this so I won't get my hopes up.
